Helping children deal with loss and separation

Helping children deal with loss and separation

You can help children begin to deal with their loss and separation from their family by thinking about what they have lost, understanding how it affects their behaviour and allowing them time and space to grieve. You can

  • listen to them when they want to express their thoughts and feelings
  • make them feel comfortable about sharing memories of their family
  • don't feel threatened if they compare what you do to what their parents do

These are some great steps towards building a relationship with the child in your care.

You can read more about trauma, loss and grief here.
