Life Without Barriers commends the appointment of Vanessa Turnbull-Roberts as Canberra’s first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children and Young People’s Commissioner.
As a national provider of out-of-home-care services and an Elevate Reconciliation Action Plan partner, Life Without Barriers welcomes this appointment and congratulates the ACT Government on taking real, tangible action that will create better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and families.
Claire Robbs, Chief Executive of Life Without Barriers said families, young people and parents in the ACT will be better off for having a strong commissioner to bring the best interests of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children forward.
“It is encouraging to see the ACT Government create a dedicated role to help address Closing the Gap targets, including the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children in out-of-home-care” Ms Robbs said.
“It is through the appointment of roles such as this on a state and national level, that we will see transformative change which promotes the interests and wellbeing of First Nations people on an individual and systemic level.”
