"This experience has been a huge step forward towards my Australia Zoo dream job." - Jenny.

In late January 2024, Jenny joined Life Without Barriers' Young People’s Employment Pathways (YPEP) and began working with Brett Parker, an Employment Pathways Coach. Together, they have been focusing on supporting her studies and developing work-ready skills.

Jenny is currently enrolled at South Metro TAFE, where she is pursuing a VET Certificate II in Animal Care. Her path to her dream career has not been without challenges. Before joining YPEP, Jenny had independently enrolled in TAFE but found it challenging to complete many course units without additional support. This year, however, has been a turning point.

Through the resources provided by YPEP, including Brett’s guidance, Jenny has successfully completed all her course units so far and is on track to finish her certification early next year.

"My role is to work with Jenny to discover her interests and passions, and then support her to gain the skills she needs to pursue her dream job," said Brett, Employment Pathways Coach.

Jenny has a strong passion for animals, particularly reptiles and dogs, which has inspired her journey in animal care. This passion recently led to an exciting opportunity: volunteering at the Shenton Dog Refuge.

The onboarding process posed some initial challenges, including a short quiz required for induction. Reading and focusing on written material can be difficult for Jenny, but the refuge’s volunteer coordinator adapted the process by offering a practical version of the quiz, which she completed successfully.

"This experience has been a huge step forward towards my Australia Zoo dream job," shared Jenny.

Now an active member of the volunteer team, Jenny spends her time gaining hands-on experience in animal care. Her responsibilities include walking border dogs, spending quality time with the refuge dogs, and contributing to their well-being through enrichment activities.

Jenny’s enthusiasm and commitment are evident in her work, and she is thriving in her role, building both her skills and confidence while pursuing her passion for working with animals.
