People with disability experience more barriers to employment than people without and we think this is unacceptable.

The Disability Royal Commission is exploring barriers in relation to employment and has held several hearings to hear from people with disability. It has identified persistent and common barriers faced by people with disability in relation to employment.

These barriers include:

(a)    attitudinal – the discriminatory beliefs, prejudices, stigmas and behaviours that may prevent a person with disability from employment and during employment

(b)   physical/environmental – the barriers that relate to issues of access, including physical spaces, communication methods and provision of reasonable adjustments and assistive technology.

(c)    organisational - the ways a business or service runs itself that may exclude people with disability, such as inaccessible recruitment processes, lack of appropriate support services and refusal to make reasonable adjustments.

(d) structural – these are the policies, systems, governmental programs and laws that can create barriers for people with disability when searching for, finding and sustaining employment.

People can experience these barriers when they prepare to enter the workforce, look for job, as part of the recruitment processes and during work. The barriers can be experienced because of the way a person or people behave or because of long standing workplace culture and practices.

Life Without Barriers has provide the Disability Royal Commission with a submission sharing our experiences and the efforts our organisation makes to break down barriers to employment for people with disability.

Our campaign to create Employment Without Barriers

1 in 5 people in Australia have disability, yet only half of those people who are of working age have secured employment. People with disability experience more barriers to employment than people without and we think this is unacceptable.
